"What's the 'SHIFT' in meditationSHIFT?"
The answer is, it's a move away from misinformation and bad instruction. Both of which, unfortunately, are prevalent today.
What mindfulness and meditation aren't:
- A way to "instantly" relax or find calm. These things can be the result of a consistent practice, to be sure. But, if you are looking for something to immediately calm you down, other exercises are better suited;
- A way to stop thoughts or "control" the mind (this is one of the most common misconceptions);
- An escape from reality, or suppressing thoughts and emotions (this is another common misconception).
What mindfulness and meditation are:
- A way to strengthen awareness of your compulsive mind and its non-stop activity;
- A way to understand - through direct experience - how your mind conditions your behavior and guides your actions and reactions;
- A way to stop being dragged around by thoughts and emotions, take your life off "autopilot," and dramatically reduce your struggles and suffering.
